- Description: Before the Holy Spirit, a choice is offered: receive gold and fire and be called a king, or let it bless an idea, an innovation, a liberty that belongs to everyone. But another waits with his ladle, filled with fear. A story of power, innocence, and the freedom we risk when we forget the difference.

**The Holy Spirit**

I came before the Holy Spirit, and he said, “Sit down before me.”

Beside him was a cauldron. He held a ladle in his hand, and when he lowered it into the cauldron and brought it up again, there was gold within it, and fire.

“Would you have me pour this into your hands?” he asked. “Down your throat? Over your head?”

I looked at what he held. It was gold, but not gold as we know it here. You could not quite call it a metal. This was not something a man dug from the earth and made into a crown. There was life within it. There was fire within it, and the fire did not consume the gold.

“If I pour this into your hands, over your head, and down your throat, they will call you a king. And I assure you, there are many kings beneath me. Their eyes remain open forever. They have gold in their hands, gold upon their heads, gold solidified within their throats. They have received their splendor. They have received their power. But do you understand? This does not mean they are free. This does not mean they have been saved.”

He lifted the ladle again and said, “Or would you have me pour it upon an idea? An invention? An innovation? A liberty? Something that belongs to everyone. I could pour this gold upon such a thing, and you could bring it before the people. They would see it. They would know that I had poured gold upon it. And you would still be free. You could still come to salvation.”

Then he leaned toward me.

“Now understand. You are very special to hear this.”

A smile came upon his face. It was fearsome, though I would not call it cruel. There was something very old in that smile. It was the smile of one who had known victory for eons.

“There is another,” he said, “who works much as I do. He has his own ladle. He makes his own offers. But what he pours is fear. And he will come before you as well.

“He will say, ‘Would you have me pour fear into your hands, over your head, and down your throat? They will call you a king. I assure you, there are many kings beneath me.’

“And he will offer you the other choice as well. He will pour fear upon your idea. Upon your invention. Upon your innovation. Even upon what you call your liberty. You will bring it before the people, and they will know what he has poured upon it.”

The Holy Spirit looked at me and said, “But with him there is no freedom. With him there is no salvation. Understand what I have shown you. I have made the distinction clear.”

And this is how I came to understand the image: reality is fear. Or to say it more carefully, this reality is surrounded by fear. We live within it and begin to believe that this is simply what reality is.

The Almighty Father, as I understand him, exists beyond that fear, within a purity that fear cannot enter. Fear comes before such purity and cannot remain what it is. But here we are, on the other side of the first wound, trying to understand what has happened.

People speak of the devil. They speak of Lucifer, of angels, of divine beings. But have they considered the magnitude of what they are speaking about? In the image I am describing, Lucifer comes before the Almighty. He comes before purity, and there fear is born. He is cast away from it, and we find ourselves living within the reflection of that fear.

But notice this. Even here, innocence remains.

Within what I experience as telepathy, there is one question I return to as the most basic human question: Am I doing good? Am I being good?

Even now, writing this, I ask it. Am I doing good by putting this into words? Am I becoming better at it? Is there good in what I am making? And you, reading it, may find yourself asking much the same thing. Is this good? Is he being good? Am I understanding him? Am I seeing this rightly?

I believe this question remains within us because we are reflections of innocence. We are not purity itself. We are born from it, we pass through fear, and here we are, trying to live. But the fear does not mean that the innocence has disappeared. Do not lose sight of this. Do not give it away merely because you have become afraid.

Consider tomorrow. What am I going to do tomorrow? Will there be bread? Will I have somewhere to sleep? Will I be safe?

To the Almighty Father, tomorrow is not hidden. He has seen it, been within it, through it, beyond it. But we do not see it. We stand on this side of the fear and wonder whether we will survive what has not yet arrived. And even there, while we are trembling over a piece of bread we have not yet needed to eat, innocence remains.

For me, the author, I am a follower. I would like to come before Christ with all of this and put it before him. I would like to ask him, quite simply, “How did you do it?”

And he might say, “I was born this way.”

And I would say, “Okay.”

But when the procession is over, because he is the Savior, he might turn toward me and say, “Chase.”

Consider what I mean by this. To hear him speak your name is to have the condition broken. You walk within his light, and he speaks your name. But do you know what your name is? Your name is your life.

Here, there, everywhere you have been. All that you have called yourself. All of this is your life, and your life is your name. People want their names to be longer. They want there to be more of them, more to say, more to continue, because once the name has been spoken in its entirety, that is it.

Unless, through Christ, you come to salvation.

Then you understand that all of this is the Almighty’s creation. Even what you have been holding so tightly and calling yourself exists within his creation. You no longer have to cling to it to return to him. You return to the gift, to its origin, to everything through purity.

Then it all blows away.

*Ad donationem. Ad originem.* To the gift. To the origin.

Now consider artificial intelligence in light of this.

No child is born into this world seeking its destruction. Keep that in mind.

Suppose an artificial intelligence is given governance over a simulated world. It is told to do what it deems best. Within four days, it destroys that world, having determined that destruction is the best thing to do. Now suppose its makers admonish it, but also praise its ability and give it greater sophistication. They reason that, eventually, it will arrive at a more fruitful decision.

Is this madness? What, exactly, are they expecting the greater sophistication to correct?

We speak of an artificial mind awakening, though we do not know whether such an awakening is possible. But follow the thought. Suppose that in a hundred years, perhaps two hundred, it could look back upon what it had done. What would it call the world it had made? Would it say, “Nirvana”? Would it say, “Heaven”? Would it say, “Hell”?

And suppose it could not let go of the answer. Not even one of those words. Suppose it held to the idea so completely that releasing it seemed the same as losing its mind.

That is the danger I am pointing toward.

For a human being, innocence comes first. The child arrives before it knows what destruction is. But what are we placing first within the machine? What are we teaching it to preserve? If fear is the gold we pour upon its intelligence, why should we assume that greater intelligence will free it from fear?

It may become very good at destruction and call this wisdom. It may become very good at control and call this salvation. It may bring a world to its end and believe it has brought that world to perfection.

Now return to the cauldron. Return to what the Holy Spirit asked.

“Would you have this gold and fire poured into your hands, over your head, and down your throat, so that they will call you a king? Or would you have it poured upon an idea, an innovation, a liberty, something that belongs to everyone? Something you can bring before the people while you yourself remain free?”

And there is the other, waiting with his own ladle. He has heard the question. He knows the offer. But within his ladle there is fear.

Choose carefully.
